Beauty Nerd #0

beauty-nerd

So as promised a while ago, I am starting the beginning of a blog series about being a smart consumer, or “beauty nerd,” when it comes to skincare and makeup– focusing on one ingredient or type of product at a time. Before I jump right into the series and start analyzing an ingredient and the products that contain it… I feel like I should cover some basics. If you are a science person, this will probably all be review for you, but if you aren’t then this will be a good place to start. So lets get right into it!

Beauty & Blogging

It has been a crazy couple of weeks and so I have been totally absentee on the blogging side of things. I’ve definitely been trying products on the beauty and skincare end, so I will absolutely have some posts coming soon to be back on track 🙂

I was able to get my hands on a few of the beauty and skincare products from my September’s Most Wanted post with my Sephora gift card– the Anastasia Beverly Hills foundation and contour stick and the Marc Jacobs Blush being the highlights. I also tried samples of Sunday Riley’s Good Genes, Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose, and Nest Dahlia and Vines. Good Genes was a super bust for me– two days of use left my skin way over-exfoliated with flaking and lots of red bumps 👎. It is a holy grail product for a lot of people but Continue reading “Week(s) in Review 9/18/16”

Questions & Coffee #2

29114542413_cf6af2c71e_z

I’m officially back in action (blogging) and back home from my away rotation. While I was gone, I received two awesome questions that I thought would be perfect to share with you all. But first– how cute is this mug? It is the newest addition to my mug collection! While away, I found myself much closer to an Anthropologie than I usually am and just couldn’t resist a great kitty mug.

Now, onto the questions.

Susan: Do you look at ingredients in beauty products and consider the clinical research, if any, when making purchasing decisions? I just found your blog and am hoping to find a beauty blogger that uses his/her science based knowledge. If you don’t, do you have any suggestions? Continue reading “Questions & Coffee #2”

Accepted.com Interview

Hi all! Sorry I’ve been a bit MIA– my rotation has been crazy busy and I don’t have strong WIFI service at the away rotation housing. Lots more posts to come and there will be a Week(s) In Review post up this Sunday ☺️
In the meantime, you can check out this interview that I did with Accepted.com where I talk about medical school (and all the ups and downs) and why I blog.

End-of-Summer Smells + Scentbird Review

IMG_3978

I find the smell of the products that I use to be such an important part of the overall experience. In this transitional time between summer and fall, I love to pull out some of the more uniquely scented products. It is an interesting time because I still want refreshing as we are till in the upper 80s most days in New York, but I am ready to put away the over fruity scents for something a little more complex. Now as ready as I am for fall, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and musk-heavy blends just don’t feel right with the weather. So, for this in-between time, I love my herbal and apothecary type smells– just invigorating enough without being overpowering…plus they tend to be a bit on the unique side, which I always love! Here is what I’ve been loving:

My Current Skincare Routine

29182228455_0826f8a057_z

My skin has been something that I have struggled with quite a bit over the past year. Before that, I had been pretty lucky in the sense that I had fairly normal skin and only ever dealt with the occasional superficial zit or two…even through my teen years. However, when I made a hormonal birth control change about a year ago, my skin completely freaked out. I got cystic acne on my cheeks for the first time in my life like a revolving door– every time one or two of them would settle down, a new painful one would show up and the old one would leave a lovely reddish-purple mark in its place. On top of that, my skin changed from normal to combination-oily. Hitting my mid-twenties, I also started to see my first fine lines around my eyes. At this point, I started to get serious about skincare.

This week on the blog I posted about my new favorite mascara– I mean if you saw the before and after shot it totally speaks for itself. For this upcoming week, I am looking to do so posts about my skincare routine and also some of my favorite “smelly” products for this transitional time of year. I also got to try Scentbird, and am excited to give you all my full thoughts and a review on that subscription service.

In MAJOR new release news, Urban Decay announced that they are releasing an all matte palette called the Urban Decay Ultimate Basics in mid-September. This is one launch that I am actually pretty excited about; I wear matte shades every day for  the hospital and clinic and it looks like it has a row of cooler tones and a row of warmer tones so it will be fairly versatile. Plus…I’ve been hoarding my Ulta points, so maybe this will be the palette that convinces me to “spend” them!

Medicine

This week on the blog I answered a few of the questions that some folks had asked through the “Ask Me Anything” tab, including some about pre-med research– keep asking those great questions!

I’m all done with Internal Medicine! I think my shelf exam Continue reading “Week in Review 8/21/16”
