Hello again everyone! I thought I would start my first “ingredients” posts with the “ABC’s” of skincare ingredients– first up, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). If you missed the first Beauty Nerd introductory post, make sure you read it here.
First, my disclaimer: Nothing I write in this series is medical advice and I will be writing from the perspective of a consumer interested in understanding how products work and if they are effective. If you have any medical questions, you should talk to your doctor!
What are they?
AHAs are organic compounds that contain a carboxyl group and one hydroxyl group at the alpha position (hence the name, Alpha Hydroxy Acids). Examples of AHAs include glycolic acid and lactic acid (the two most commonly used for cosmetic skincare results), citric acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid.
What are they used for? Continue reading “Beauty Nerd: Alpha Hydroxy Acids”
It has been about two months since I’ve posted on the blog and it has been a crazy and wonderful time! Since the last post, I had a birthday, celebrated Thanksgiving and spent a month back home with my family, and got engaged. The hiatus to focus on family has been wonderful, but I am ready to get back to blogging!
I thought I would share some of my favorites, material and beauty-related and otherwise, to fill you all in on the time since the blog hiatus.

So as promised a while ago, I am starting the beginning of a blog series about being a smart consumer, or “beauty nerd,” when it comes to skincare and makeup– focusing on one ingredient or type of product at a time. Before I jump right into the series and start analyzing an ingredient and the products that contain it… I feel like I should cover some basics. If you are a science person, this will probably all be review for you, but if you aren’t then this will be a good place to start. So lets get right into it!

In exchange for an honest review, POPSUGAR offered to send me their September Must Have box to try out. POPSUGAR, the website you might now for their Facebook share-able articles, celebrity news, seasonal recipes, and makeup tips offers a subscription box. With so many subscription boxes on the market, I feel like you have to have a really good product to make it worth the buy. Keep reading to see what came in my box and whether I think it’s worth the price!

So a few weeks ago, Ouidad reached out and offered to send their new product launch to me as well as one of my readers in exchange for an honest review. What an awesome opportunity! I totally fan-girled, because me, my sister, and my mom have all been long time Ouidad product users. All three of us have different curl types and patterns, but we have all found products in the line that we have been loyal to over the years.

This week I reviewed the Bite holiday value set…and the new holiday value sets just keep rolling out! I definitely won’t be mentioning all of them on here, but another one that has caught my interest is the Lorac Mega Pro 3. Definitely not for the casual makeup user, this palette has 32 shadows, appears to be a good mix of warm, and neutral-ish cool tones as well as mattes and shimmers, and is $59 dollars at Ulta releasing October 2nd. In general, the Lorac Pro formula (especially the formula from the Pro 1 + 2 Palettes) are absolutely wonderful– soft, pigmented, and very easy to blend. I will definitely be interested in swatching the one in stores to see how it looks!
Coming up this week (if all goes as planned😏 ) I have two pretty amazing product review posts…including one with a💃🏻 giveaway💃🏻. It will only be open for a short time, so keep checking back!

Every year, it seems like the “holiday season” for shopping gets pushed up earlier and earlier However, in the midst of the marketing frenzy, there are also occasionally some opportunities for a few really great values for beauty lovers. One of them out there is the Bite Beauty “The Perfect Bite” set from Sephora. Continue reading “Is it “The Perfect Bite”?– Reviewing Bite Beauty’s New Holiday Set”

It has been a crazy couple of weeks and so I have been totally absentee on the blogging side of things. I’ve definitely been trying products on the beauty and skincare end, so I will absolutely have some posts coming soon to be back on track 🙂
I was able to get my hands on a few of the beauty and skincare products from my September’s Most Wanted post with my Sephora gift card– the Anastasia Beverly Hills foundation and contour stick and the Marc Jacobs Blush being the highlights. I also tried samples of Sunday Riley’s Good Genes, Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose, and Nest Dahlia and Vines. Good Genes was a super bust for me– two days of use left my skin way over-exfoliated with flaking and lots of red bumps 👎. It is a holy grail product for a lot of people but Continue reading “Week(s) in Review 9/18/16”
I’m officially back in action (blogging) and back home from my away rotation. While I was gone, I received two awesome questions that I thought would be perfect to share with you all. But first– how cute is this mug? It is the newest addition to my mug collection! While away, I found myself much closer to an Anthropologie than I usually am and just couldn’t resist a great kitty mug.
Now, onto the questions.
Susan: Do you look at ingredients in beauty products and consider the clinical research, if any, when making purchasing decisions? I just found your blog and am hoping to find a beauty blogger that uses his/her science based knowledge. If you don’t, do you have any suggestions? Continue reading “Questions & Coffee #2”
Hi all! Sorry I’ve been a bit MIA– my rotation has been crazy busy and I don’t have strong WIFI service at the away rotation housing. Lots more posts to come and there will be a Week(s) In Review post up this Sunday ☺️
In the meantime, you can check out this interview that I did with Accepted.com where I talk about medical school (and all the ups and downs) and why I blog.
PS, you can always keep up with me on Twitter and Instagram snaps 😉
